Welcome to Invercargill Central Baptist Church

Welcome to the Invercargill Central Baptist Church.
We are a multi-generational faith community welcoming people from all ages and stages of life and faith.
We all share the same joys, struggles, interests and activities and are strengthened by our shared desire to know God, encourage each other and serve the wider community.
We encourage each other to embrace faith in a meaningful way that relates to our everyday lives.  Through our teaching we aim to provide relevant messages by relating biblical messages to today’s world.

This week at Night Church, as a part of our 'Stations of the Cross' series we're going to be celebrating a Tenebrae Service.
For many people who haven't grown up in a church tradition that celebrates the Holy week services, you'll mystified at what this is, so here's a brief snapshot;

The word "tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning "darkness." The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Good Friday service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus' burial.

This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ's death and await the coming Resurrection.

You might also be wondering why we're doing this a week before Good Friday, good question! Night Church will be taking a two week hiatus over the Easter holidays, and will only return on the 5th May, so we're doing it as close to Easter as we can!
