Baptism is an outward confession of what has happened within and an expression of our identification with Jesus (Romans 6:1-14)
A Baptism is a bit like a Wedding Ceremony: At some point in their growing relationship a man and woman decide to pledge themselves to each other and to join their lives together for the whole of life. They tell people about that decision. Then they publicly declare that commitment to each other before God and witnesses in a ceremony. doing the public and legal things follows on from the decision they have made.
So it is with baptism. The person has already decided to pledge their life to Jesus Christ and give themselves to him forever. They tell people about the decision. Then they publicly declare that commitment in baptism, doing the things that follow on from the decision they have made to give them-selves to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, who is both Lord and Saviour.
