the Spiritual life begins when we first become surprised by grace. The Spiritual life continues in the hope and expectation that God will continue to surprise us along the way.” – Phil Daughtry
Having a spiritual life and following Jesus isn’t about knowing all the answers (or even knowing all the questions). It’s a commitment to a journey. We’ll find answers along the way (along with more questions) and we’ll grow and change.
The early followers of Jesus had ordinary lives. They were Tax Collectors, Fishermen, Sex workers… and when Jesus showed up and seemed to know what was going on inside them, they were surprised. Those that chose to follow him started a journey of surprises. If you read their stories, (a good place to start is in the book of Mark -it’s in your Bible), you’ll see that far from having it all sorted, they seem to constantly mis-step and mis-speak. They are quite frankly astonished at this Jesus who does what they don’t expect. “the people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “what’s this ? A new teaching- and with authority ! He gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him !”(mark 1:27).
As they travel with Jesus, they seem to be changed. And that’s what it’s like for us.
This guide to growing isn’t going to answer all your questions. It’s just a start at writing what the Christian journey can be like. I’m hoping we’ll add to it often, but that’s a lot easier to say than to do. If you’re reading this, please be patient. It’ll take some time.
If I stumble over something that I reckon is helpful I’ll add it to the appropriate section.
Meantime, may you be surprised by God.
